Challenge, Resist, and Defend

Today, the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States marks the beginning of another term with policies in direct opposition to core ACLU principles and values.

The ACLU of Northern California stands ready, as it has throughout its history, to protect fundamental rights under federal and state law – and the Constitution. And we are ready to do so again, from day one of the second Trump administration.

His platform targets immigrants, transgender youth, reproductive choice, voting rights, freedom of speech, and racial justice, among other threats to civil rights and civil liberties and abuses of power.

Our priorities remain clear as we confront these threats. We will challenge discriminatory policies and block efforts to dismantle constitutional protections. We will resist the normalization of anti-democratic threats and actions.

We will defend immigrants’ rights to due process in the face of mass deportations. We will protect Californians’ privacy rights from government overreach, and we will advocate for the rights of unhoused people.

And we know we are not alone. We call on our governor, attorney general, mayors, and other state and local officials to help disrupt Trump’s draconian agenda, and we call on you, our members, supporters, neighbors, and friends to join us. Local action matters more than ever. Don’t let discouragement silence you. Organize, speak out, and stand with us to defend our fundamental freedoms.
