Hundreds of millions of sensitive records have been compromised by data breaches. If your personal records were compromised by a breach, wouldn't you want companies to be required to tell you important information about the breach and how to protect yourself?

Then ask Governor Schwarzenegger to sign SB 1166, which standardizes the details that must be disclosed to security breach victims.

California state law currently requires notification for certain security breaches, but the law does not specify what information about the breach must be disclosed to victims. As a result, notifications often lack important information like the type of personal information at issue. Consumers don't know how to respond or protect themselves. A UC Berkeley study found that more than a quarter of data breach victims "do not understand the potential consequences of the breach after reading the [notification] letter."

SB 1166 will rectify this gap and standardize the specifics that must be included in breach notification letters. State Senator Joe Simitian noted that "No one likes to get the news that personal information about them has been stolen, but when it happens, people are entitled to get the information they need to decide what to do next."

Please call or email Governor Schwarzenegger today and urge him to sign SB 1166 to update security breach notification law. The Governor vetoed this important bill last year and we need your help to make sure it is signed into law this year!
