ACLU of Northern CA

San Francisco – Following the mass shooting and murder at Latin Night at Pulse, an LGBTQ club in Orlando, Florida, Abdi Soltani, Executive Director of the ACLU of Northern California, issued the following statement:

We hold in our hearts those who were injured, those who were killed, and the families and loved ones who are mourning in Orlando, and throughout the country after the shooting and mass murder.

The massacre at Pulse on Latin night was fueled by hate. The target of this violence was the Latinx LGBTQ community. We grieve with and stand in solidarity with LGBTQ people of color across the nation. We offer love and solidarity to Muslim people, including LGBTQ Muslim people. And we reject the Islamophobia that has resulted from this tragedy.

During Pride month, we are reminded that the gains we’ve made are not enough. We must deal with the root issues of hatred and bigotry and all the ways that they manifest and threaten our communities.

We will continue to work for a nation where everyone can live and love openly.
